What should I know about buying a used treadmill? What brands are good? I have a fairly low budget (about $150) which I realize can be tricky for this kind of thing and I may end up with a piece of junk which I would really like to avoid if at all possible.
Here are some brands and models I am considering…

Any thoughts on these brands or other brands I should look for? Weslo is a very common brand for sale but what I have read it seems they are not very good.

Craigslist list is a great resource for these type of things. There are so many people who invest hundreds and hundreds of dollars into their equipment only to use it a handful of times, leaving it in virtually new condition. Search your local craigslist for “treadmill”. Check it out, if it appears to be working and in valid condition, then purchase it ! Private party sales like these will save you hundreds.
Most of the treadmills available at the retail level are built by the same company, Icon.
When you are looking at a used treadmill, look at the belt, it should run down the center of the treadmill and not be too worn. Make sure the treadmill is unplugged, and stick your hand under the belt, feel the board under the belt, it should be somewhat smooth with no cracks or deep gouges.
Start the treadmill, without getting on it, run the motor through all the speeds, listen for squeaks, ticks, or rattleing noises. Get on the treadmill and start running on it, does the belt slip?
The real test can be dangerous, so I’ll leave it up to you if you want to do it or not. Grab onto the side bars and using your feet, try and stop the belt. Can you? Depending on the size of the motor, you may not be able to. Listen for any loud squealing or grinding noises.
